“Food, water, air and hope”

Thursday 31st August Thought for the Day for my friends in The Business Cafe

“Food, water, air and hope”

3 years ago I was at an annual Award Ceremony at Peterborough Regional College, asked to be one of the ‘guests’ who would present a prize to a Student.

On the top table was a Katie Piper. Some of you may know of this amazing lady who was the victim of the most brutal acid attack by a vengeful ex-boyfriend. A beautiful model and clearly a lady with the most beautiful heart too.
She gave the most moving speech I have ever heard, by jaw was dropped the whole time, my eyes poured with tears and the level of inspiration she gave me was unbeatable.

She told her story, not as a victim, as a survivor, a room full of students listened intently to her words of courage and then she said this sentence…

“I realised, lying in my hospital bed, i wasn’t going to die, covered in bandages, in agony and knowing that my life had changed, and said the myself…. I can live 3 weeks without food, 3 days without water, 3 minutes without air, but I know I can’t live another second without hope”.

As I type this I feel giddy, even now my eyes tingle. Her words resonate when ever is feel that moment of despair. Hope is a beautiful emotion. A deep sense of ‘things will get better.

When I googled HOPE, this is the result……

Hope is an optimistic attitude of mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes related to events and circumstances in one’s life or the world at large.[1] As a verb, its definitions include: “expect with confidence” and “to cherish a desire with anticipation”.[2]

When I hear someone say “I hope so” or “let’s hope”, my immediate thoughts are always, and so… so what are you doing to make sure your hope happens. Hope doesn’t manifest itself unless we are doing all the actions to create the things we hope for. We can all only begin to imagine the courage and strength of spirit that Katie Piper had to draw upon to create the life she now has, a mummy, an inspiring public speaker and figure and a business-women, charity leader and author

So what ever you hope for, have the courage and the plans to manifest them. But know exactly what your hope is, sometimes we can’t articulate that dream, that hopefulness, so hard to know what the actions are that we need to take.

We can’t say, “I hope my life improves” or “I hope tomorrow is better than today”, it won’t be unless we make the effort and start doing things differently to get the different results we want.

So, Katie Piper, thank you, and to all my friends in The Business Cafe, I hope your life improves, that you get the skills and the courage and self belief you need, and yes, I am working towards making that happen, so my hope is not just going into thin air, I promise.
